‘Am I overreacting for distancing myself from a friend who loathes cats?’: Person adopts a cute kitten, but their friend insists they don't, even though the cat is already adopted

Look, we know not all people adore cats. They're wrong, but we understand that not all people are built the same. Some are built to love cats like their own children, and some are built to be wrong for not feeling it. Some people are built to adore these fluffy four-legged feline overlords, to bask in the glory of their reign over us, and some people are wrong about not knowing they are under cat rule. Some people love cats, and some people don't know cats at all.

But the thing is, when two of these people meet, it usually ends with "Nah, I don't like cats so much". And we can respect that - despite them being wrong. They know what's good for them at that moment, and that's enough. We're not judging. But when a person actively tries to deter a cat lover away from their love of cats, it's just… why? We can't understand. But what we can't understand even more - is when this person calls you your friend, and tries to deter you from adopting a cat, after you've already adopted a kitten.

And that's exactly what happens to this person here. Their kitten - already adopted. But their friend - they just keep hating on cats in front of them. Why would anyone do that?

That's a rather odd situation, isn't it? The cat is already adopted, it's not like this friend can come up to this person and give them reasons why they should reconsider their decision to adopt a cat (whatever these weird reasons would have been, but that's besides the point). The kitten is already home, adopted, treated, papers and all.
Also, it's not like a friend telling you in secret why you should distance yourself from a certain person, for example. Let's say you start hanging out with a shady figure, and a friend tells you “Hey, you shouldn't invite this person to your home or to your life, because they're doing something wrong”. Because it's a kitten we're talking about here. It's not like this friend can come up to this person saying “Listen, this kitten is shady, suspicious, don't invite him inside.”
So it just makes this… ‘friend' look very weird in comparison.

It's weird when you have to hide something so major in your life in front of some people. But it's not like when you're keeping a surprise birthday party from a relative - it's more like a person who wants to come out of the closet but knows the friend in front of them doesn't necessarily hold positive views about LGBT people. And that's a very strange situation to find yourself in.
